Golfers wanting to reliably escape the cold over Christmas and still stand on the green usually end up on Tenerife or Gran Canaria, in peak season, in the Canaries. Lanzarote is different: here, César Manrique turned the island itself into art – white houses afloat in a sea of black lava, architecture in dialogue with nature, landscapes that could belong to another planet.

Never overrun, and while frost is knocking at the windows back in Switzerland, you’re sitting here on the terrace in a T-shirt: 18–23 degrees, sunshine, a gentle breeze.

There are only two golf courses, admittedly, but they come with the Atlantic, volcanoes, excellent restaurants, culture and plenty of peace and quiet. More than enough for one, two, three weeks over Christmas.
